Captain Sam's
Yesterday it seemed as if the cold front would pass us by without much migration, but northerly winds and favorable conditions last night brought us a huge push of migrants overnight, filling our nets today with 278 new birds and 13 recaptures, of 28 species! This morning is the second day this season to beat our previous record (274) and with the incredible diversity, it was no surprise to find a few first-of-season species in the rush: Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Yellow-rumped Warbler, and Blue-headed Vireo! We will catch hundreds of Yellow-rumped Warblers, probably starting next week, but the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Blue-headed Vireo are only captured by the handful each season.
