Do you hear a rattle?

Captain Sam's:

Today was quit slow. My excitement for the day was capturing a song sparrow that had a bill deformity. Its lower mandible was longer than the top. It was aged as an after hatch-year, which indicates that is still able to effectively forage for food! We captured a few flocks of Myrtle Warblers which is always a treat for me, even though they will still be coming through during the rest of the season.

Here is this cutie with its elongated lower bill. Its not super long but it's still out of the ordinary.

Little Bear:

It was another slow morning, with wind and a low capture rate causing us to close early. We ended up with 28 birds (19 new, 9 recaptures), most of which were our usual suspects for this time of year: Catbirds, Sparrows, Kinglets, and Yellow-rumped Warblers.

our nets. Can you spot the Catbird
in this picture?

The most exciting moment of the day was stumbling across this beautiful Canebreak (Timber) Rattlesnake on our net trail! We were able to safely observe it at a distance, as it seemed to be moving slowly due to the cool weather. Canebreak Rattlesnakes are widespread across the southeast and can thrive in many different habitat types, including our coastal site. 1 This species will hibernate when winter hits, so I'm happy we got to spot one before then. And don't worry - their prey item of choice is small mammals, not birds!
