Some Birds Saturday

Captain Sam's:
Today was a slow but windy day. We had a total of 25 birds captured. Our highlight of the day is capturing a Blue-headed Vireo.  This little fellow was a dull color, almost seeming to be a different bird. After carefully examining the bird it is for sure a Blue-headed Vireo. Our first instincts were right, but we were really hoping for our 100th species. I think this bird is still a great catch even though it was not our 100th species. Tomorrows winds are predicting some NW winds, so hopefully we can get some more movement in the next few days!

Little Bear:
What a day, what a day. We caught four birds with two new bands and two recaptures! At least is was an excellent bird watching day. There was a good amount of visible seabird migration going on over the ocean. We observed over a thousand Double-crested Cormorant, a hand full of Common Loons, two species of Scoters (Black and Surf) and a Northern Gannet!

Rain Day

Captain Sam's:
We battled the elements today at Captain Sam's and ended our day with 11 new birds banded and 4 recaps of 6 species. We opened nets almost two hours late due to rain and dealt with on-and-off showers and high winds throughout the day. A flock of Tree Swallows stopped by but failed to make its way into the nets. We were hoping they would be our 100th species of the year, but maybe tomorrow!

Little Bear:

Due to the rain, followed by high winds, we decided to not open at Little Bear today. Tomorrow is looking much more promising to catch some more birds!
