CAPTAIN SAMS
Although the temps were slightly cooler this morning, the dew point was still relatively high causing the air to be saturated with moisture resulting in wet vegetation. I am looking forward to drier conditions tomorrow morning with lower humidity and dew points being predicted.
Despite the wet start, we had a productive day of banding with 67 new birds and 32 recaptures. There was definitely some migration last night as some new individuals moved into the area. We banded two more Brown Creepers which makes 7 for the season. That may not sound like a lot but over the last 15 years we have only banded a total of 15 at Captain Sams.
Looking ahead, we are in store for much cooler temperatures for the next several days with lows in the 50s and the highs only reaching into the mid to upper 60s. In theory, this should help bring some more birds into our area as lingering migrants will take advantage of the north winds.

LITTLE BEAR
Although today's conditions at the station were pretty damp, it was a nice cool morning starting in the mid 60's! It wasn't a busy day; We caught exactly 10 new birds and 10 recaps (and 10 species, oddly). Still, we stayed productive with some net repair between runs.
Painted Bunting (hatch-year, sex unknown) |
This season continues to be Little Bear's best yet for Painted Buntings, as we caught our 286th new individual today! Of our most common species that we encounter here at KIBS, these birds are my favorite. Adult males are arguably one of the most vibrant birds you can find in South Carolina, but even the all-green females and young have their charm (After all, what other green birds can you find around this area? Not many!).
