New Species: Cooper's Hawk

Cold temperatures (with wind chills around 35 degrees) this morning precluded us from opening up the nets until 8:30am.  There were not many birds around today, and we only banded 13 new birds and had 3 recaptures of 7 different species.  The bird-of-the-day was a Cooper's Hawk that was captured on the very last net round of the morning.  This the first Cooper's Hawk ever banded at the station!  We have had many Cooper's Hawks in the nets over the years but they always seem to get out before we can get to them.  But not today - thanks to Mattie who was able to get to the bird before it got out.
