It was a very productive day at Captain Sam's, with 257 new birds banded and 20 recaps processed of 34 species. Some northwest winds and cooler daytime temperatures brought us four first-of-season species: two Yellow-breasted Sapsuckers, a Bay-breasted Warbler, a Song Sparrow, and a Yellow-rumped Warbler were all caught for the first time today. Of the millions of songbirds that migrate through North America each year only a small fraction of them are banded. Today we captured an adult male Common Yellowthroat that was originally banded at the Navarre Marsh Banding Station in northern Ohio on 5/22/2018. It is very rare to capture a bird that was banded at a different location so it was very exciting to see an unfamiliar band number come through station today.

LITTLE BEAR
Howdy folks. You may have heard we had a pretty big day as mentioned above. Between our two sites we banded over 450 new birds! Thanks to the help of our wonderful volunteers, life was easy breezy as we just chugged along banding without a hitch. We broke 200 birds at Little Bear for the first time this season, which feels pretty good. It was quite the warblery day and we actually banded 14 species of them. Together with Cpt. Sam's captures, KIBS banded 17 species of warblers today! The winds also brought in some sparrows for our site. We got our season first Swamp Sparrow and White-crowned Sparrow. We should definitely see more sparrows showing up as well as Myrtle Warblers in the days to come. Enjoy some pretty birds below.
