We had a very unexpected big day at Captain Sam's with 286 new birds banded, a season high for the site! We were so busy we didn't have time to take many pictures. A highlight for me was a hatch-year Yellow-billed Cuckoo, a life bird for me!
Little Bear:
The migration forecast led us to believe that it would be a more moderate day at Little Bear. However, it ended up being an excellent day for banding! We caught so many birds on our first net run, that we started to let some birds go at the net. After collecting 102 birds on that first run, we closed all of the nets so that we could catch up. We didn't re-open until 11:30, and by then things had calmed down quite a bit.
We caught the first Gray-cheeked Thrush of the season for Little Bear. We must have interrupted it's breakfast because it still had some berry juice smeared on its bill.
We also processed a very striking after hatch year, male Cape May Warbler:
Another highlight of the day for me, was this very handsome (and very fat) hatch year, male Northern Parula:
I'm really looking forward to what the rest of October brings!
