The day began dreary as it was overcast with a slight drizzle at open. Our first net run yielded some good numbers, but we encountered rain soon after that forced us to collapse our nets. After reopening them when the rain subsided, the numbers did not return. We banded 45 new birds today, mainly consisting of Gray Catbirds, and processed another ten recaptures. In other news, we have officially banded over 2,000 new birds as of today for the season.

Little Bear-
Our morning at Little Bear began with some wind and rain, but cleared up shortly after 8am. We didn't catch too many birds today (24), but were treated to a very special first-of-season species. Common Ground Doves use to be abundant around the dunes and scrub here on the island and were a regular capture at both stations up until the past couple years. After catching 5-10 during the first 3 years of banding operations at Little Bear, none were captured last fall. We were all quite excited to find an adult male in one of the nets shortly after we re-opened following the rain.
