First of September

Captain Sam's:

Today at Captain Sam’s we wondered about how our new capture totals thus far compare to last year’s for September 1st. As it turns out we are only behind 2019 by two individuals! As of today, we have banded 373 new birds. The banding season has only just begun and we are all excited to see that number climb.

Migration is always an interesting time. The technology available to make predictions on bird movements is fairly sophisticated thanks to weather radar. Yet, there is still a lot we don’t know on a fine scale. In an effort to understand it on a finer scale, we have been placing nano tags on Painted Buntings. Today we deployed three more and will be looking forward to the data collected on the Motus network.

Little Bear:

We had a slow morning at Little Bear today, with only 10 birds banded and 2 recaptures (both from the past few days). The biggest highlight was a very showy Chuck-wills-widow that flew around us as we were hiking in to the site before sunrise. After that, the temperature rose quickly and we were forced to shut down fairly early. We may be in for another slow day tomorrow, but it looks promising for things to start picking back up later in the week. If we're lucky, that Chuck-wills-widow may soon find its way into one of our nets as well.
