Patience is a Virtue

Captain Sam's:

This week has proven to be a steady influx of birds. We have been catching anywhere from fifty to a hundred individuals per day since the 31st of October. The cool weather has brought several new wintering species to the island and comfortable conditions for the banders. It's looking like the weather will be warming up for the rest of the week, but winds will still be generally coming from the North. It is hard to know what to expect this time of year. At any moment, we could have a hundred Yellow-rumped Warblers in our nets! You just never know...

Little Bear:

We headed out to the site today uncertain of what to expect. Things didn't look too promising, but the past two days had exceeded expectations, so I thought maybe that trend would continue. That wasn't the case however, because after the first couple net checks it was obvious that we weren't going to be catching very much today. One of the few highlights was catching a vibrant male Prairie Warbler, a species we haven't seen for awhile (the last one banded here was on Oct 24th).

After Hatch Year Male Prairie Warbler (JL)

Prairie Warblers occur in the Charleston area year-round but are much more common during migration months and the summer breeding season. Although a few likely overwinter on Kiawah, we typically stop catching them in late October. He was an enjoyable bright spot this morning, before the wind kicked up and we decided to close early.
