A Windy November Morning

Captain Sam's

Due to the strong wind this morning, only Captain Sam’s was able to be opened today.  Despite the wind, we managed to catch 29 new birds and 12 recaptures, representing 12 species.  A Swainson’s Thrush and Black-and-white Warbler were a nice surprise for this time on the season.  We also banded the third Northern Flicker of the season.  Northern Flicker was once divided into two separate species, the Yellow-shafted Flicker and the Red-shafted Flicker.  The eastern population of Northern Flicker has yellow shafts to their flights feathers, whereas the western population has red shafts to their flight feathers.  Males also have different mustache colors in the two populations, with the eastern having black mustaches and the western having red.  Despite these morphological differences, there is a large hybridization zone and because of this zone they are considered one species now.
