A GREAT DAY OF FOS!

LITTLE BEAR:

Today we started out the morning with quite a bit of birds. We manage to capture 13 new birds and 3 recaptures. For our site, we captured our first of the year Common Yellowthroat and a Prothonotary Warbler. This female Prothonotary Warbler was beautiful and was photogenic. The Prothonotary Warbler is only one of two North American warblers that nest in cavities, and they will readily nest in nest boxes as well. Check out this link and help build nest boxes for these birds during the breeding season!

We managed to capture a Painted Bunting that was banded last August making him an after-second year bird. Unlike Captain Sam's site, the wind has managed to close our nets early, so hopefully tomorrow is going to be better!

CAPTAIN SAM'S:

With a slight northerly wind, our first few net runs were our most productive yet! We ended the day with a total of 36 newly banded and 4 recaptured individuals of 14 species. We had several firsts for the season, including a Red-eyed Vireo, Ovenbird, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Hooded Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, and Trail's Flycatcher. Being my first time to band in the East, several of these were my first to see in the hand. I was most excited about the Ovenbird and Yellow-billed Cuckoo!
