"September Morn"

Captain Sam's

We banded 19 new birds and had 5 recaptures of 11 species at Captain Sam's this morning.  The species composition was fairly typical for this time of year.  We did band two more Prothonotary Warblers which brings our total to 14 for the season - almost twice the 5-year average for the species over the entire season.  Although a majority of our Prothonotary Warbler captures occur in August, we can still get them through September.  With as strong of a year as they are having already, I expect to see some more come through the banding station in the coming weeks ahead.  Stay tuned for a post on ageing and sexing Prothonotaries...we need to get some pics of females first.

Because the current track of Hurricane Hermine has its sights on Charleston, we decided to remove all of the nets from Captain Sam's and Little Bear this afternoon.  The center of the storm is expected to get here tomorrow night with 3-6" of rain expected and sustained winds between 45-50 mph and gusts up to 60mph.  We should start seeing the first of the rain bands early tomorrow morning.  We are hoping to get out on Saturday afternoon to put the nets back up so we are ready to go by Sunday.

Little Bear

We had a pretty good morning out at Little Bear with 20 new birds and 8 recaptures of 10 species. This is probably due to the fact we were able to stay open a little longer than usual due to the cooler weather. Unfortunately, due to tropical storm Hermine that will pass through tomorrow, we had to take all the nets down at both sites to prevent them from getting damaged. It looks like the storm will pass over quickly, and we should be able to put the nets back up Saturday afternoon and resume banding Sunday morning. We should also see an increase in migrant activity after the storm since it will be cooler with more northwesterly winds. Maybe the storm will bring in something really interesting!
