The cold front brought us some birds today! Maybe not as many as we might have been hoping for, but we were pleased to see a good number and variety of birds stopping through. We captured a first of the season Eastern Towhee and another rather gorgeous Black-and-White Warbler. Our totals for the day came out to 26 new captures and 3 recaptures of resident birds. It was definitely a day for the migrants!
Black-and-white Warbler (Hatch-year, Male) |
Black-and-white warblers typically spend their winters in the low country of South Carolina. Some birds, however, may travel further south for the winter and therefore pass through our area in the early portions of migration. This bird may decide to spend the winter season as far south as Ecuador!
Little Bear
It picked up a bit at Little Bear this morning, at least on the first couple of net runs, but we still ended with only 26 new birds and 2 recaptures of 12 species (almost identical to Captain Sam's). We did have a couple firsts for the season on the first net run, which included an Eastern Kingbird and a Yellow-breasted Chat. The Eastern Kingbird was definitely the catch of the day because we do not catch many at KIBS and it will probably be the only one we catch this fall. This was a young bird, as seen by the lack of an orange-red crown sported by the adults, which usually stays hidden under the head feathers.
Interesting fact: The Yellow-breasted Chat was included in the wood-warbler family, which seemed out of place and strange when comparing it to all the other warblers. As of this year, it has finally been moved to its own family, Icteriidae.
