FOS Marsh Wren and 3rd ever Mourning Warbler!

Captain Sam's
It was another busy morning at Captain Sam's with 170 new birds and 10 recaptures of 22 species. Common Yellowthroats led the way again with 113! Mixed in with all the Common Yellowthroats were a couple good species for the site. One was a first-of-the season Marsh Wren, which we do not catch many of during the fall, and the other was a Mourning Warbler. The Mourning Warbler is a first-of-the season for Captain Sam's (one was already caught at Little Bear) and the 3rd ever for KIBS! The one caught at Little Bear was a hatch-year female and the one today at Captain Sam's was a hatch-year male, providing us with a great comparison.

As you can see from the pictures below, young female Mourning Warblers have a brownish-olive head with a yellowish eye ring. Their throat and upper breast is buffy yellow, lacking gray or black mottling. The sides of the upper breast also have brownish-olive patches.

Mourning Warbler (hatch-year, female)
For hatch-year males, their head is more grayish olive and they have a yellowish white eye ring. Their throat and upper breast is yellow to gray with a yellow wash. They also have brownish-gray patches along the sides of the upper breast. These gray patches can often have black mottling, which our male was lacking.

Little Bear
It was a tad bit slower today but we still made it into the triple digits with a total of 106 birds, 94 of which were new and the other 12 being recaptures.  A total of 15 species were represented in today’s catch.  Mixed among the Common Yellowthroats, we had a good numbers of White-eyed Vireo and Red-eyed Vireo moving through.  These last few days of a hundred plus birds has really helped us make up for days we missed because of Hurricane Irma.
