Captain Sam's
Today was one of our less eventful days of bird banding. We were able to capture 15 new birds and 15 recaptures. The highlight of the day were the thousands of Tree Swallows migrating through the area. We are anticipating migration will pick up early next week as the next cold front moves through.

Happy Birding

Little Bear
Another slow day at Little Bear despite overnight winds out of the north and east. Catbird number were much lower today than in past days and no one species over whelmed the charts today. One species of note was our only other capture of an Orange-crowned Warbler this season. These warblers tend have their orange crown concealed under other feather on their head. Male Orange-crowned Warblers only display their vibrant orange when chasing off other males from their territory. These green birds can are often seen gleaning bugs from leaves in mixed flocks during migration and throughout the winter. Their nondescript looks helps them to remain concealed when nesting on the ground among the dangers of nest predators.
