Captain Sam's
Today's captures at Captain Sam's were a very accurate representation of last night's migration. There was not much movement across the entire country, which was reflected in our high recap-to-new bird ratio. We had 30(!!!) recaptures today and 25 newly banded birds of 14 different species. Many of our 24 recapture Gray Catbirds were originally banded a couple of days ago following the cold front.
The winds have been coming out of the north all week and we've been surprised at how little movement there has been. Hopefully those northern birds will soon be encouraged to make their way south!

Little Bear
Unfortunately things slowed down even more today and we only caught 47 birds total: 36 new and 11 recaptures of 15 species. Moderate winds were still a factor but we managed to open all nets. In addition to some of our new end-of-season arrivals (Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Swamp Sparrow, and Myrtle Warbler) we had a few latecomers: a Magnolia Warbler and a Red-eyed Vireo. Hoping for some increased activity in the next few days!
