1000 Birds for the season at Cpt. Sams!

Captain Sam's:
Despite having a relatively busy morning, we had slowed down a bit compared to the past few days. The good news is that we finally hit 1,000 newly banded birds at Captain Sam's! Compared to last years data, we have banded 350 more birds on this day! How cool is that! Our highlighted bird of the day would be the Magnolia Warbler and a nice after hatching year male American redstart.

American Redstart are a unique warbler having a little more rictal bristles than most warblers. Rictal bristles is an aid in helping catch flying insects. Redstarts act more like flycatchers, mainly catching flying insects. Next time you see a bird up close, check out the face for these features!

Little Bear:

Our days remain slow out on the East end of the island. The wind has not been our friend over the past week. We haven't been able to keep all of our nets open for our whole session because of it. We only banded 18 birds today and processed one recapture. We did capture an Indigo Bunting, which is the first of the season for this site.

There doesn't seem to be much migratory movement over the next couple of days, but hopefully the wind will die down and we can operate to our full potential. A useful resource we use for predicting when we will have busy days or not is a website called birdcast. They are affiliated with well known names in the scientific fields including, Cornell, NASA, NOAA and NSF among others. Using radar and meteorological data they can create prediction models for migrating birds. The live migration map is useful to help visualize bird movement across the country. Check it out!

Here's Dan with an adult Painted Bunting! Neat!
