 Captain Sam's:

Today was a slower day with only 17 birds captured. 13 newly banded birds and 4 recaptures. No new birds for the day, but every bird that gets into our nets is an exciting one! Hopefully a great one pops up in the next few days. We are looking at another potential great weekend but things can change, so my fingers are crossed.

Little Bear:

Much like at Captain Sam's, today was not the fastest paced day for banding but we finally caught an Eastern Towhee making it the site first for the year. What's even more interesting is that it was a recapture, and after looking at that previous data we discovered it was banded as a hatch year last year, making it two years of age this year. Going along with talking about recaptures, we had another interesting recap today, a male Painted Bunting! This bird was even older, it was banded in 2016 as a hatch year bird, caught once in 2017 when it was a second year, and then went undetected until today. This bunting is now five years old and is a perfect example of how birds can be quite sneaky even if they're residents of the island. For these reasons today's haiku is dedicated to him.
