Captain Sam'sIt was a very slow day at Captain Sam's today with 27 new birds banded and 17 recaptures of 8 species. The interesting parts of the morning were not even related to birds but mammals. There was a bobcat hanging around a few of our nets so we sent Ryan out on bobcat patrol to prevent it from getting any birds. We also had a pair of deer come very close to the banding table while we sat there! We are supposed to be getting a cold front tomorrow so hopefully bird numbers increase. This cold front will be bringing wind and rain though, so we will see how much banding we get done.
Little BearWe had a slow day at Little Bear today as well. We banded 39 new individuals and recaptured 5 of 14 species. Yellow-rumped Warblers dominated the catch again today with 18 new birds banded. Our highlights of the morning include a late Yellow-billed Cuckoo and a first for the Little Bear site, a White-throated Sparrow.
We're hoping to see an increase in bird activity and diversity tomorrow with the cold front coming through, but will likely face problems with the wind tomorrow at Little Bear.
