Captain Sam's
Things have slowed down again at Captain Sam’s with only 24 new birds and 6 recaptures being processed today.  Common Yellowthroats were lacking this morning, with only 4 new ones being banded.  Thankfully, Red-eyed Vireos were present throughout the morning and made up close to a third of the new birds banded today.  The highlight of the morning was our first of the season Veery.  Veery is the first of the Catharus thrushes to move through, usually peaking around the mid-September in our area.  Swainson’s Thrush and Grey-cheeked Thrush move through a little later with their peak usually around the first week of October.  The last Catharus thrush to move through is the Hermit Thrush.  The peak of Hermit Thrush migrants are seen at the end of October but plenty are captured later in the season as they do overwinter here.

Little Bear
At Little Bear today we had our second-best day of the season so far, with 44 new birds and 6 recaptures of 15 species. The overnight winds were consistently from the west and southwest--ideal for causing migrants to stop at coastal sites. About one-third of the total captures consisted of Common Yellowthroats and two-thirds of the species were migrants.

Today's highlight was a Baltimore Oriole. While this species is not uncommon, they tend to stay high in the trees and don't hit our nets very often. Last year Captain Sam's and Little Bear captured a total of only 12 new Baltimore Orioles.
