Captain Sam's
Today was a relatively slow but steady day. Some of the later migrating species are beginning to arrive such a first of the season Blue-headed Vireo. Bird activity dropped off by mid-morning which gave us ample time to do some much needed housekeeping. We have been banding nearly everyday for the last two months and in that time the nets have gotten torn by banders, snagged by branches and vines, and ripped by deer and bobcats. In preparation for Monday night's cold front, we decided to repair, resew, and patch up the holes in our nets. Repairing mist nets is a long, tedious process so as you can imagine we only barely scratched the surface today. More work to do tomorrow.

Little Bear
Despite slight northeasterly winds this morning we had a pretty slow day out at Little Bear. Still plenty of Catbirds to go around and some good diversity. We enjoyed another after-hatch year female Common Ground-Dove and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher among the catbirds. Our atypical capture of the day was a small group of Tufted titmouse that followed each other into one of our nets. Last year at Little Bear we only banded four new Tufted Titmice, and today we captured three in one net alone. This might be a good year for them at Little Bear.
