It was a great day out at Captain Sam's with 169 new birds and 15 recaptures of 20 different species. We had a big push of Gray Catbirds this morning with 84 being banded. The only other species that came close to this total was the Common Yellowthroat with 40 being banded. We also caught 2 more Gray-cheeked Thrushes, but the highlight came on the first net run with another Swainsan's Warbler! This is the third Swainson's Warbler of the season and the second one banded at Captain Sam's this fall.

Migration is picking up again at
Little Bear with 103 new birds banded and 7 birds recaptured this morning. Gray Catbird season is in full swing with 69
of them being banded. Mixed among the
catbirds was our fourth Chestnut-sided Warbler of season and
first-of-the-season Gray-cheeked Thrush.
We are continuing to see species that we consider early migrants and haven’t
seen too many of the late season migrants that usually start showing up around
this time. It’s likely with our next big
push of birds, we should start seeing some of the late season species such as
Hermit Thrush, Swamp Sparrow, and Yellow-rumped Warbler.
