CAPTAIN SAM'S
The eastern end of the island also saw less bird activity than anticipated. We had 37 new birds and 4 recaptures of just 9 species. Among many of the regulars, we banded another new Yellow-billed Cuckoo (the second in the past few days), two very chunky Swainson's Thrushes, and one White-eyed Vireo. White-eyed Vireos are fairly common, but we haven't seen one in a couple weeks, and this was a nice after hatch-year showing off its stunning bright white eye.

I was hopeful for a busy morning ahead of the cold front due to the westerly winds overnight but, alas, the bird had other ideas. We banded 34 new birds and had 16 recaptures of 17 species. A couple of highlights included a first-of-the-season Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and a chunky little Tennessee Warbler

The front moves through tonight which will bring us much cooler temperatures but as with almost all strong cold fronts it also brings wind. We are expecting 18-20 mph north winds in the morning. The birds should be on the move tonight but the wind may spoil our morning or least reduce our efforts.
