October 5th

Captain Sam's

We had a better day at Captain Sam's with 53 total birds of 15 different species.  Gray Catbirds have continued to be the most common species and we also saw a decent push of Painted Buntings.  One of our hatch-year buntings was carrying interesting ectoparasites, likely some species of feather mite of the genus Trouessartia.  Wild birds can carry a variety of parasites, including mites, lice, ticks, worms, fly eggs, and larvae.

Little Bear
The strong winds continue to persist and once again limit us to just half of the nets being operational at Little Bear.  That being said, we had a slightly better morning with 37 new birds and 5 recaptures, comprised of 10 species.  Highlights of the day included our first-of-the-season Marsh Wren and several new Painted Buntings.  The new buntings we are catching now are birds that likely bred further north and are moving through on their migration, whereas the buntings earlier in the season were birds that likely bred nearby.  It also seems we are now transitioning into our Gray Catbird season.  At KIBS, we have 3 dominant species that come through at different points in season.  The first specie to come through in big numbers is Common Yellowthroat, with the peak of their season being from mid-September to early October.  The next specie to come through is Gray Catbird and their season typically begins to pick up now and will continue to the mid/end of October.  The final wave we’ll see are Yellow-rumped Warblers (Myrtle), who typical begin showing up around the end of October and continue all the way through November.
