Captain Sam's
Today was pretty windy, much like yesterday. We were still able to run the large majority of the nets out at Captain Sam's. The winds, however, seemed to keep bird activity to a low. Our total captures for the day ended up being 80 birds. With the cold front arriving yesterday, we have not seen the typical influx of birds that usually ride the fronts down the coast. Windy nets can, however, affect capture rates as well, so it may be that the birds are around, but we are simply unable to catch them.
It is forecasted that these strong winds will continue into next week so our banding totals may continue to be at a low compared to the past couple of weeks.

Little Bear
It felt like fall this morning, by
South Carolina standards, with the arrival of our first real cold front of the
season. The cold front brought the
morning temperatures down in to the mid-60s but also brought strong and gusty
North East winds, which is the bane of Little Bear’s existence. After arriving at the station, we quickly realized
that none of the nets would be operational in these conditions and we were
forced to call it a day. Sadly, these
winds are supposed to remain for a majority of the week and will continue to put
a damper on Little Bear’s efforts.
