Captain Sam's
Windy conditions continued this morning, but we still managed to run most of our nets. Almost all of our captures were either Gray Catbirds or Common Yellowthroats, with just one or two individuals of the other species. We ended up with 52 new birds and 14 recaptures, for 66 birds total.

It was a tad less windy today which allowed us to open 7 out of 20 of our nets this morning. But as the morning progressed, the wind began to pick up and we were forced to close around 10:30. Despite our reduced effort, we still managed to band 24 new birds and recapture 6. We also were rewarded with our first-of-the season Eastern Screech-Owl. We’ve been hearing their whinnying throughout the season but today we were finally lucky enough to have one make its way into one of our nets. There are two color morphs of the Eastern Screech-Owl, red and gray. Throughout their whole range, only about a third of the population is considered red phase. Despite making up only a third of population, a majority of the screech-owls that have been banded at KIBS have been red phase including the individual banded this morning.
