It was an eventful day at Captain Sam's, but not so much in terms of birds. Morning car troubles caused us to open later than usual, and rain coming in from offshore caused us to close early. In the little time we were open, though, we managed to catch 8 new birds and 2 recaptures of 6 species. The highlight capture for me was a hatch-year Red-eyed Vireo. It was my first to see in the hand, so I could see the darker eyes, rather than the red of an adult. I always enjoy learning how to age different species.

Little Bear
Although we too got caught up in the rain at Little Bear, we were able to band a total of 12 new birds and recaptured 5, for a total of 9 species. We also caught two new species for the season at this site, a "Traill's" Flycatcher and a Grey-morph Eastern Screech-Owl! While we typically catch a few Eastern Screech-Owls at both sites throughout the season, they are usually the more common Red-morph variety, so it was cool to see this "rare" morph today. I had also never banded a Screech-Owl before, so I was pretty pumped to get to process this hatch year guy/gal!
