The First and Possibly the Last Louisiana Waterthush of the Season

CAPTAIN SAM'S
Today was a carbon copy of yesterday in terms of the number bird captured with 20 new birds and 8 recaptures of 11 species.  The species makeup was a little different though with two new species for season:  Louisiana Waterthrush and Black-and-White Warbler.  Louisiana Waterthrushes are among the earliest of migrants and by the time we start banding on August 15 many have already moved on through.  We are always lucky to catch one in the first two weeks of the season.

We have done a couple of posts over the years on separating Louisiana Waterthrushes from the very similar Northern Waterthrush.  See the following links to learn more about the ID characteristics of both of these species.

LITTLE BEAR
It started out as a great morning because we managed to open all of our nets today. As the day progressed, the wind started to pick up, we had to close some of our nets. We captured 9 new birds and 4 recaptures. One of our recaptured birds was a Painted Bunting that was banded at a residential house on Kiawah Island on June 21, 2018 and came out to Little Bear to molt.
My favorite catch of the day would be the American Redstart that is pictured below.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day with some more birds!
