FOS White-eyed Vireo and Cape May Warbler

Captain Sam's

After closing down the station last week to prepare for Hurricane Florence, we were finally able to resume banding again today. It seems like Florence brought us a few good birds as we banded a total of 31 birds and had 2 recaptures, for a total of 14 species. Both stations received our first of season White-eyed Vireos, including both a hatch year and adult at Captain Sam's. While hatch-year White-eyed Vireos have a darker, greyish colored eye, adults have a very distinct, bright white eye, which is, of course, how they got their name. Another highlight for the day for me was a Yellow-breasted Chat. Since I had never banded one of these beautiful birds before, I was very excited to process this after-hatch-year female!

Little Bear

We finally were able to get back to banding this morning. While heading out to the station, we were given a light show with all the offshore thunderstorms that had just passed over the station just in time to open. Bobolinks were flying over low, pushed down by the thunderstorms, and I was hoping we would catch one with no such luck. We did have a pretty good morning though with 30 new birds and 8 recaptures of 12 species, which is the best day at Little Bear so far this season. We added two first-of-the-season species, a White-eyed Vireo and a gorgeous adult male Cape May Warbler (pictured below). Hopefully today was a sign of things starting to pick up!
