Late Blue Grosbeak

CAPTAIN SAM'S

Today was a dreary day. With rain in the forecast, we tried to get the nets up and see what we might catch. We did not get a lot of birds but only 8 new birds and 3 recaptures. We did catch a hatch-year  Blue Grosbeak as our last bird.
A cool bird to talk about is the Eastern Towhee. Most typical Towhees have red eyes, but there are two subspecies that have yellow eyes and white eyes. The yellow eyed subspecies are in southern Georgia and Florida but some can go up to the Carolinas. The white eyed Towhees are mostly in Florida.

LITTLE BEAR

Even though it was a wet and windy start to the morning out at Little Bear, it ended up being a pretty good day with 21 new birds and 5 recaptures of 10 species. We had an interesting diversity of late migrants with 3 Cape May Warblers, 3 Blackpoll Warblers, and a Gray-cheeked Thrush. We are now up to 11 total Blackpoll Warblers banded this fall, which is the most ever caught in a season at KIBS. Unfortunately, we had to close up early due to storms pushing in off the coast. The wind returns tomorrow morning but hopefully it will not shut us down too soon.
