Philadelphia Vireo!

Captain Sam's:

We had a great morning at Captain Sam's today! We processed 57 birds, composed of 19 different species. And we banded our first swamp sparrow of the season.

But the most exciting news is- we caught a Philadelphia Vireo! It is only the 5th Philadelphia Vireo to ever make it into our nets here at KIBS! The last time a Philadelphia Vireo was banded at KIBS was in 2017. The other 3 captures were in 2012, 2013, and 2014. It was extra special because it was a lifer for both Kristin and me!

Curious Philadelphia Vireo
Breeding predominantly in Canada and Maine, Philadelphia Vireos breed farther north than any other vireo species. During a male's courtship display, he sways side to side while fluffing up his plummage and splaying his tail. To learn more about these adorable little birds click here.

Not to be outdone, here is our FOS Swamp Sparrow:

Little Bear:

With cool temps and overcast skies, we had another productive morning of mist netting at Little Bear- before approaching rain showers convinced us to close the station a little early. We managed 84 captures of 15 species, including our first Yellow-rumped Warbler. We’ve also continued to catch a good number of Cape May Warblers (one of my personal favorites), and today we had our first adult male.
