November Firsts

Captain Sam's:
We had quite the cold snap over the night! Our site was opened at 51 degrees and it remained cool all day, which was a nice change for us bird folk as well as the birds themselves. Some of us northerners were getting a little worried that fall was never coming. The cold air and NW winds brought us some new migrants including our first of the season Field Sparrow!

Hopefully, the cool air sticks around and keeps new birds flowing down towards us.

Little Bear:
The first-of-season species continue to roll in at Little Bear! We were waiting on a Blue-headed Vireo and captured our first today, two weeks after Captain Sam's first. We also captured a colorful Golden-crowned Kinglet!  Males and females of this species both have yellow crowns, but only males like this one have orange as well.

And, just as I predicted a few days ago, we captured out first Sharp-shinned Hawk! This was an especially exciting bird because we don't capture many adults, and this one was a recap. This adult male was banded at Little Bear as an after-second year in 2017.

The eyes of Sharp-shinned Hawks will redden and become darker as they age
All these new species bring us to 97 species captured in 2019, a record high for KIBS! All of us are hoping we'll break 100 before we leave in a few weeks, what new bird might be next?
