Today Was a Hoot

Captain Sam's:

It was a slow day at Captain Sam's with only 11 birds captured total. We banded a female Black-and-white Warbler a few days ago on November 9 and we have continued to recapture her multiple times a day since then. She may just be resting on the spit, but Black-and-white Warblers winter in parts of the southeastern US so she may be spending the winter months with us on Kiawah!

Little Bear:

Today we caught another Eastern Screech-owl, but not too much else. Winds from the south made today a bit warmer than the previous few mornings, but it also slowed down the bird activity at the station. Even though today's was the 4th Screech-owl banded at Little Bear this fall, it was Dan's first. Since the assistants rotate between working at each station, Dan had missed out on the first 3. It was great to have another today for him, since now everyone on the crew has gotten to have a Screech-owl in the hand this season!

Happy Dan with our Eastern Screech-owl, a hatch-year
