Rain Psych Out

Captain Sam’s:

Today was another very slow and humid day. We were thinking that the rain was going to cut us short today, but luckily it held off for most of the morning. We managed to break even with newly banded birds and recaptured birds with 10/10  (might be our luck). Nothing new really popped out to us but to me every bird we catch is a great bird! No matter what it is, even if it is a Northern Cardinal and it ends up biting you. I'm hoping tomorrow's rain will hold off till the afternoon as well but only time will tell.

Here is a picture of a young Yellow-rumped Warbler (myrtle subspecies). You can see the molt occurs in the alulas, where A1 is replaced while A2 and A3 are still retained juvenile feathers. This makes this bird a hatch year.

Until next time,

Little Bear:

Our start today was delayed by the rain. Then when we got started, it seemed as though there was a good amount of activity with birds chipping and flying around. Several Northern Cardinals, Brown Thrashers, Gray Catbirds, Carolina Wrens and a number of Yellow-rumped Warblers were moving about. Yet, the first two runs yielded next to nothing. I presume most of the birds in the station at this point are residents or over-wintering birds and many have already been caught and processed. They do actually learn net locations and become quite good at avoiding them. After the first couple runs, we did pull in a small flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers and some other that pushed our numbers higher than the past couple of day. Overall, it was an enjoyable day. The supposed downpour never materialized, so that was good too.
