Captain Sam's:
The skies were clear and the wind was minimal, so today was one of the first full days of banding this season. The heat started to swallow us and the birds, so a few nets were closed prior to the rest. However, the day was full of birds, season firsts, and lots of opportunities to learn.
For the first time in a few years, an Eastern Screech-Owl was caught at Captains Sam's. This individual was born this year, which we know because of the downy feathers still on the head and notched white markings on the outer primary coverts. In an adult bird, these feathers would show connected bands of white patterning. The Screech-Owl was released near the area it was caught and before departing, posed on a branch for us.

Another new species for the season was a couple of Red-eyed Vireos. These birds were both hatch-years and lacking (for the most part) their namesake reddish eyes.

After a few days with little or no Painted Buntings, it was nice to see them back in the nets. Including an adult male undergoing heavy molt. An incredibly beautiful bird to see and have in the hand.
Today was a great day at the banding station. With some luck, the birds and weather may stay in our favor.
