Another Cool Morning

 Captain Sam's:

It's great to see another great day at Captain Sam's! We had a total of 133 birds with 125 of those being newly banded birds. Even though we didn't get any first of the season, I still think it was a great day catching all these birds. These cooler northern winds are making the mornings feel like a true fall until the sun comes out and warms it up. It makes me miss my home state (Pennsylvania) as I know the leaves are starting to change and making fall a great season for watching leaves fall. I will say though, it is a lot nicer to be seeing birds migrate. My favorite bird for the day, which is always hard to choose from is probably going to be the Yellow Warbler. They are striking when it comes to having bright yellow colors. Such a key identification for these cuties! Pictured below is a nice adult female that we captured today. Check out those red streaks that shows up on her breast and that nice yellow color. Makes it looks like she's been sniffing too much of those buttercup flowers.

Below is a Buttercup flower for my reference from above.

Little Bear:

Today was another decent morning at Little Bear, with crisp morning temperatures brought by north winds. It heated up out there quickly though, and bird activity dropped off just as fast. We ended the day with 62 newly banded birds, and 10 recaptures for a total of 72 captures. Though much busier that our days at the beginning of the season, it felt like such a slow day after the busier days we've had!

The water level has receded slightly after the dumping of rain earlier in the week. Though hip waders are still required to walk the net lanes, we haven't caught any Green Herons in 2 days. We keep hoping to see another in our nets!

A nice bird to take a close look at today was a hatch-year White-eyed Vireo. They're more of a "brown-eyed Vireo" as a hatch-year, as they don't quite get their name-sake white eye until their second year.
