Hot and Muggy

 Captain Sam's:

Walking out of the house this morning, we were immediately greeted to heat and humidity and starting sweating right away. Not expecting much movement in the heat, we were surprised to find 6 birds in the nets in the first round. It slowed down considerably from there though, and we ended the day with only 12 birds. Since Ben and Aaron took a day off today to rest before migrants (hopefully) come through on Friday, we were really hoping that would cause us to catch a special bird today in their absence. Sadly Kristin and I were disappointed on that front, but there's always tomorrow.

Little Bear:

Little Bear’s morning started out not so bad! We caught a good number of birds in our first and second net runs, at least for the sort of winds we’ve been having. It was quite hot from the get-go and kept getting hot and muggy as the morning drew on. No species that were new for the station or season but still catching more Common Yellowthroats! Once the temperature reached 90°F we decided to make one last net check and close them up for the day. On our way out we always stop at one spot in particular hoping that in migration we’ll see a Buff-Breasted Sandpiper among the Killdeer. Today was that day! Most often Josh has said it has been September 7th of their, usual, one day stay. This individual must’ve not gotten the memo. That being said we were able to get really nice looks at this neat bird! The sandpiper was too cool not to write a haiku about and the weather the opposite of cool.

         Wet humidity
        Oxymorons in the sun
        Clouds, a great relief

        Scaly scapulars
        The buff sheep of Calidris
        Par for the (golf) course
