A New Warbler a Day Keeps the Doctor Away!

 Captain Sams:

Today was a delightful day of banding! With 27 birds total, we had 14 new birds and 13 recaptures. Amongst these, we had a new species of warbler...a male Black-throated Blue!

(male hatch-year Black-throated Blue Warbler)

During our second net round, we had three Prairie Warblers. Being able to compare all three side by side, we got in good practice at ageing and sexing this species.

(from left to right: male hatch-year, male after hatch-year, female hatch-year)

Perhaps one of the most stunning species of warbler is the Prothonotary, with its vibrant yellow coloring. We were all in awe of this beautiful male!

Today was a great day for warblers! We also had two American Redstarts and a recap Swainson's Warbler. We are excited to see what birds tomorrow brings!
