CAPTAIN SAM'S
A fairly typical day of banding for a hot and muggy August morning with 7 new birds and 15 recaptures of 10 different species. We banded our 4th Blue-gray Gnatcatcher of the fall which is one more than we banded during the entire season last year.
This is a good time to introduce the 2019 banding crew. Josh, Kristin, and Beth arrived to Kiawah on Saturday and started working on Sunday. Dan, Arcata, and Dave won't arrive for another week or so. LITTLE BEAR
Today was a slow day. With the clear skies, the sun shut us down a little sooner than expected. We captured our usual birds for the day but got our first for the site, a Red-eyed Vireo. These birds are usually easy to age when it is the start of fall. Adults will have a nice bold red eye and hatch years born this year will have a brown eye. Later in the season these youngsters will get their red eyes and looking for different keys to age is needed. Here is a link on Red-eyed Vireos! They are unique because of their hooked shaped bill making them closely related to the Shrike family.
Hopefully tomorrow will be more successful!
