The Big Day Hangover

Captain Sam's:

It's tough to follow up a day like yesterday. Even with processing 82 birds, it still felt sort of slow compared to the 203. The first run yielded good numbers, but it quickly dropped off. No new species, but our highlight birds were a Magnolia Warbler and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo at close.

Sometimes we get so caught up on talking about birds on this here blog, but today I want to discuss Bill Kee. Bill is one of our most frequent volunteers at the station and he is such a helping hand. He is not Bill Nye, but as far as citizen scientists he's a fun one to have around the banding table. When Bill isn't practicing his handling skills and efficiently scribing data for us on our big days, he enjoys long walks amongst the net lanes aiding us by carrying our birds while ensuring their safety. Sure makes my life easy. Thanks, Bill. Have fun in Chicago!

Little Bear:

Things slowed down at Little Bear today with 48 new birds and 6 recaps. We caught all of our most common species today, but this little Yellow Warbler had something interesting to show us. Typically, most birds molt their feathers in a certain order, one at a time until the whole feather tract has been replaced. This bird skipped molting one of its greater coverts for some reason.
