Warbler Wednesday

Captain Sam's-

We caught a nice diversity of birds out at Captain Sam's today. We processed a total of 52 individuals, composed of 16 different species. Some of the highlights of the day for me included three Black-throated Blue Warblers and a hatch year White-eyed Vireo. I wish everyone could experience what it feels like to wake up in the morning, looking forward to a day of working with some of your very favorite birds!

Here is a photo of Dave with one of his favorites- an after hatch year, female Black-and-white Warbler.

Shout out to Katie Doherty for helping out today!

Little Bear-

We had a warm and fairly birdy morning at Little Bear, with 35 captures within just 3 hours of banding. While it may not seem like October when its over 90 degrees by 9am, the continuing procession of Gray Catbirds and warblers prove that it is in fact the fall season. We've begun getting some Catbirds with older bands, and today we processed a "GRCA" (bander code for GRay CAtbird), that has been visiting the station since its first year of operation in 2015. Its always a treat to spend a short amount of time with known age birds, to reflect on the many miles they've flown, and to deeply appreciate the importance of preserving the stop-over habitat that they depend on to survive. Although I didn't get a picture of that particular Catbird, I did photograph an adult male Black-throated Blue Warbler and a juvenile Magnolia Warbler that were banded at the station today.
