It was less windy out at Captain Sam's this morning but unfortunately, we did not have as many birds migrating through as we did yesterday. We ended the morning with 49 new birds and 20 recaptures of 17 different species. Gray Catbirds made up almost 70% of our recaptures, which is no surprise since we have banded so many of them over the past few days. We also had a first-of-the-season Song Sparrow for Captain Sam's and caught 2 more Golden-crowned Kinglets, one male and one female. Female Golden-crowned Kinglets will only have a yellow crown patch whereas the male will have a yellow and orange crown patch (below).

Little Bear
It was a bit relieving to finally get some nets open out at Little Bear today. The winds subsided enough for us to open almost everything, but it seemed as though all the birds that arrived yesterday had already left. We captured a total of 92 birds today with a little bit of variety. We captured most of the first of season's that Captain Sam's caught yesterday. Swamp Sparrow, Golden-crowned Kinglet, and Yellow-rumped Warblers were all new for us at Little Bear today. On our drive out of the station today, however, we did find two Eastern Meadowlarks on the golf course. Winter birds are arriving!
