Just adding a little bit of nectar to our list

 Captain Sam's:

Today was not a bad day! We had a total of 59 new birds and 8 recaps. Out of the recaps, there were only 4 from yesterday's extravaganza! Kind of crazy how fast birds can up and leave an area. I think my favorite part of the day was catching a nice adult female Ruby-throated Hummingbird, and a nice after-hatch year male Painted Bunting. So far all of our males that we captured have been going through some extensive molts and look so crazy and rough. This male was basically done, except for a few feathers that were finishing up! The fun part is that this male was not banded yet! Most of the time we get adult males/females that were already previously banded, so this one was a treat indeed.

The days are slowly dwindling down again but I'm pretty excited to see what our next cold front will bring us!

Little Bear:

Today at Little Bear we were expecting a really great day like yesterday and were a little disappointed that it wasn’t. It still was pretty busy and brought in some interesting birds. On days like this it’s nice to get recaptures! We re-caught the Yellow-breasted Chat from yesterday, which I got the chance to look for the molt limit today. That was quite neat to have the data from yesterday to test myself against! Other really interesting catches were Little Bear's first ever Great-crested Flycatcher and a hatching year male Ruby-throated Hummingbird. I thought it was crazy when Josh told me that Little Bear had caught an Ash-throated Flycatcher (another species in the same genus; Myiarchus) before a Great-crested. As for the hummingbird, this little one was tangled pretty good but having prior experience with them made it an easy task. I haven't seen all that many hatching year males in the hand before. With about 5 gorget feathers this young guy stole the show for a few minutes. We also caught a ton of Common Yellowthroats, who know exactly how to get themselves stuck just enough to make it tricky. With that being said, today’s haiku is for them.
