It was hot and humid today...not really any hotter or more humid than any of the other days this week, I just wanted to emphasize the hot and humid part because we only banded 9 new birds and had 1 recapture this morning out at Captain Sam's. We did capture our first-of-the-season Common Yellowthroat, a species that we will band in great numbers a little later in the season.

Little Bear
Today marked the first day of the season for Little Bear. It was a fairly productive day with 33 new birds and 2 recaptures, made up of 9 species. Most of the birds captured came in on the first two net runs and by midmorning the bird numbers had tapered off. The most interesting encounter of the day was not a bird but instead an alligator. During the opening round, Michael was greeted by the 6 foot alligator at his first net. The gator hung out near that net for a few hours before wandering off. This was not our first encounter of the season with this gator. During the station setup, Aaron came a little too close for comfort when he accidentally stepped on the gator. The water in the trail system was much deeper then and the gator had submerged itself and didn’t move until Aaron’s foot was touching him. Thankfully the water levels have dropped, making it easy to spot the gator and also making the area less appealing to it as well.
