Today was a better day than yesterday! We had a total of 45 newly banded birds and 10 recaptured birds. We got our first of the season American Goldfinches, which was pretty cool since they usually hang up in the canopy and don't come down near the nets. We also got a Slate-colored Junco, a first of the season for Captain Sam's.

LITTLE BEAR:
It was a pretty chilly morning, but we're enjoying the cool weather compared to the rest of the season being in the 80's and 90's. The wind held off enough to allow most of the nets to remain open the full morning. We completed the day with 21 newly banded birds and 5 recaptured. We caught 11 different species, including a White-crowned Sparrow and a Yellow-breasted Chat, which are few and far between this time of year. Some chats may stay around this area for the winter, but most should have already migrated south to the tropics. On the other hand, White-crowned Sparrows are just starting to arrive here for the winter, coming from northern Canada. Though not the first of the season, it was my first White-crowned Sparrow to see this season.
Even colder temperatures and possibly stronger winds are forecasted for tomorrow morning, but the radar is showing some bird movement, so we're hoping for a busier morning!
