Today was an extremely slow day. Only 5 new birds were banded today and 13 birds were recaptures. I hope that tomorrow will be a better day with more birds!

Little Bear:
The forecasted rain managed to miss us this morning, allowing us a full day of banding. Despite being a slow day, we did have some worthwhile captures. We were pleasantly surprised to band the second ever Slate-colored Junco for KIBS! I didn't realize it was such a rare event when I extracted it, but Michael's expression when I returned to the banding table told all. After contacting Aaron, we found out the only other junco banded for KIBS was in 2012 at Captain Sam's! There is a wide range of geographic variation in Dark-eyed Juncos, with six forms being most often used to separate them. From my time banding out west, I'm used to seeing the Oregon variation, so it was fun to see the Slate-colored in hand. The same net run provided us with two new House Finches and my first time to band one! Overall, we banded 11 new birds and recaptured 11 of 8 species.
