Red-shouldered Hawk

Captain Sam's

Numbers at Captain Sam's were slightly better this morning with 41 new birds and 16 recaptures. The species diversity was much higher then recent days with a total of 21 species. The most exciting bird of the morning was a station first a hatch year Red-shouldered Hawk! He was on the small side but had the characteristic red shoulders and crescent wing windows which you can see in the photograph.

We also had a few swamp sparrows. Swamp sparrows are a medium sized sparrow with an all over streaky dark appearance. They are known for inhabiting both fresh water and brackish marshes. An adult swamp sparrow has a very gray face while a hatch year bird will have a buffy brown face. It is an impressive comparison when seen side-by-side.

Little Bear
At Little Bear this morning we had 37 new birds and 22 recaptures, representing 12 different species. Once again, Gray Catbirds dominated the mix. We're hoping the cold front predicted for this weekend changes things up a little and boosts our numbers.

Captain Sam's
Today there was a great deal of species richness at Captain Sam's. Twelve different species composed the 52 birds that were processed at our station. One of the notable captures was the Golden Crowned Kinglet, a first of the season for Captain Sam's. Although only slightly larger than a hummingbird, they are easily identified by their gold and black crest. Although they commonly winter throughout South Carolina, they can withstand temperatures as low as -40F. A recaptured Eastern Screech Owl was another notable capture today. These raptors are found in South Carolina year round and are always a delight to see and hear. screech Owls can be found in a range of color from reddish brown to gray. Once thought to be a single species, the Eastern and Western varieties have since been divided into individual species.

Little Bear

It was slow day at Little Bear with 31 new birds and 12 recaptures, made up of 11 species.  The current radar is showing birds are on the move tonight.  We often see a little flurry of activity before a front passes through and we should hopefully experience more activity at the banding stations the next few days.
