Winter is Coming

  CAPTAIN SAMS

It was a bit slower today, with a total of 85 birds (52 new and 32 recaptures). It was once again a chilly morning, and with winter-like weather comes the winter birds. We are continuing to catch late migrants such as Golden-crowned Kinglets, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and Yellow-rumped Warblers. It seems as though most of the neotropical migrants have already passed through, although we are still catching a few stragglers here and there.

We had yet another Tennessee Warbler today, the 7th for Captain Sams this season! We also (unsurprisingly) are continuing to catch lots of Gray Catbirds. Capturing a lot of recaptures has been the theme for the last few days, which is to be expected after having several big days of banding in a row. Eventually these birds will move on, but for now they are hanging around the station.

It has been a great season so far, and I am excited to see what else we catch during these last few weeks!
