Yellowthroat Bonanza

 Captain Sams:

Today was a busier day at Captain Sams, with a total of 49 birds (9 of which were recaptures). We saw many familiar species today, including the usual Northern Waterthrushes, Red-eyed Vireos, and Prairie Warblers. Our most interesting catches were an adult female Prothonotary Warbler and a hatch-year Veery. As usual, we caught a few resident birds, including 3 Northern Cardinals. It is always nice to see how these guys are doing as the season progresses!

Our most numerous bird of the day was by far the Common Yellowthroat. We caught 20 of these little cuties (18 new and 2 recaptures). All of us got a lot of practice aging and extracting these birds, and I'm sure we will see many more in the weeks to come!

We are excited to see what new birds come in during the next few weeks, and we are hopeful of busier days in the future!

Little Bear:

Today was not at all what I expected. We were hoping to get a few good birds today ranging in the high numbers. We ended our day with a total of 18 birds. The highlight of the day was catching not 1 but 2 new first of the season for Little Bear. One of the species, I was hoping to catch a while ago was the Northern Mockingbird. I spotted 3 of them near the end of the station acting goofy and flying around. They looked young and I hoped that one of them would find the nets. Long behold Wentao came back with a young Northern Mockingbird. The next species that was amazing to see was a Yellow-throated Warbler. We don't catch many of these cuties but every time I see one I love seeing that yellow throat. They don't sit well to be photographed but this one was a well behaved cutie indeed!

I know the winds have shifted to the north-east the rest of the week but I am hoping to see some new species or at least catch more birds during that time.
